Operating Results

On this website we often use the term operating results.  When we do this, we may or may not be referring to financial quantities such as revenue or net profit.

For example, when writing about process improvements in a software engineering group, the term "operating results" almost certainly means non-financial results.  In this case, "operating results" might be defined as the rate at which new products are developed, or the number of defects fixed per month.

On the other hand, when writing about a business as a whole, the term "operating results" may very well refer to financial quantities.

Hopefully, our use of the term will be clear from context.

"Ten years ago, I brought John Sambrook onto a risky and highly political project that had far-reaching consequences within our company.  As the second member of the team, me being the first, John found solutions to difficult problems, problems I could not have solved without him, averting project failure over and over again.  He produced code and documentation at a professional level I have rarely seen in my thirty years of software engineering.  The project was so successful that the team was spun off as its own company, which now employs more than 700 people."  (Bob Alexander, SonoSite Inc.)
