Project Management

Project ManagementThe picture on the right shows a massive traffic jam.  In this free-for-all, everyone is trying to go first, and as a result, traffic that should be able to move is forced to wait for traffic that cannot move.

What a waste!  With proper synchronization and subordination (we call them rules-of-the-road) flow through this intersection could be significantly improved.

Many project organizations are operating in a similar manner.  There are many projects in execution and all are competing for the same set of resources.  If you think this also leads to high levels of waste, you're correct.

Improving project management reduces waste.  Reducing this waste greatly increases the rate at which projects are completed by the organization.  And while it might seem paradoxical, getting more done more quickly improves quality and morale.

We can dramatically improve your ability to consistently complete projects quickly and well:

  • Project planning

Many organizations struggle to develop highly effective project plans.  The result is a kind of chaos during development.  The negative ramifications are serious and many.

Without a highly effective planning process, the organization's plans 1) contain much more work than necessary to achieve the project's objectives, and 2) are brittle, which inevitably creates chaos during execution.

We can provide you with an effective planning process and help you plan or re-plan your portfolio of projects.

  • Project execution

Effective project plans are necessary, but not sufficient, for good execution.  Good execution also requires the ability to track the execution of a project portfolio and know which projects are executing well and which projects need assistance.

Good execution also requires a road-runner, or sprinting, style for project team members.  In software development, the sprint is an essential concept of Scrum.  In project management, the road-runner behavior is an essential part of the Critical Chain project management strategy we follow.  The Critical Chain project management methodology is significantly different than the well-known Critical Path method.

We can provide your organization with the tools and assistance needed to execute effectively on the projects in your portfolio.

"Ten years ago, I brought John Sambrook onto a risky and highly political project that had far-reaching consequences within our company.  As the second member of the team, me being the first, John found solutions to difficult problems, problems I could not have solved without him, averting project failure over and over again.  He produced code and documentation at a professional level I have rarely seen in my thirty years of software engineering.  The project was so successful that the team was spun off as its own company, which now employs more than 700 people."  (Bob Alexander, SonoSite Inc.)
